Consisting of guitarist / vocalist Rafa Romero, lead guitarist Lewis Linnington, bassist Grant Fraser and Calum Fox on drums, The Angles are an indie rock outfit with a distinctive sound that blends the best of both genres. Nowhere can this be identified and understood better than with their new single ‘Black Rhino’. From the very beginning you are hooked in with short sharp chords interrupted with brief breaks, before a repetitive and hypnotic riff takes control, with a simple yet driving drum beat pushing the song through the verses to a chorus that takes hold of your attention and doesn’t let go; it’s easy to see this becoming a favourite for those who attend their live shows.
Accompanying ‘Black Rhino’ on the release is B-Side ‘All the Fun of the Affair’, a swaggering, almost blues-y track, with some fantastic guitar playing and a bass line that adds a new dimension to the song. This song whilst being the rockier of the two, still retains the same elements of the band’s sound – a nice contrast, but not so much that you don’t know who you are listening to. Romero’s vocals sit perfectly on top of the instruments on both tracks, making them fantastic listens that are absolutely worth a look at.
‘Black Rhino’ is available online now, and the single’s launch show is on the 6th May at The Caves, Edinburgh, with a Glasgow show at The Record Factory on the 12th May. In addition they are also performing at the MT Promotions launch event at The Mash House on 22nd May, and are deservedly headlining Counter Culture Club Night at The Record Factory on the 4th June. I highly recommend you get yourselves to one of these shows!
